Lap by lap Coverage of the Singapore Grand Prix (Part 3)
Lewis Hamilton was furious after his retirement and the stewards stated that they are reviewing the move in order to give a verdict about it. This was a vital blow to the McLaren driver as this affected his championship chase dearly. After his second retirement
in row, McLaren seemed disappointed as well but Mark Webber managed to survive and the race proceeded. One should wonder what his girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger might be thinking after that.
Moving on, Michael damaged his front wing as Nick Heidfeld and himself got close around turn 8 however, Webber escaped the scene without any damage. Vettel was gaining on Alonso by lap 39 as he was just 1.5 seconds behind the leader Fernando Alonso. On the
other hand, Button did not give up either as he was still trying to gain on Mark Webber. Webber’s tyres were now getting old and it seemed that Button might take the advantage. Vettel set the fastest lap of the race in lap 42 and it seemed that he was catching
up on the race leader Fernando Alonso. The race is expected to finish on the two-hour limit and is scheduled for 61 laps.
The drivers were now emotionally at their peak. Hulkenberg ran wide giving Massa an opportunity to take him on for the 9th place but was not able to manage his way across him. The stewards still did not give their verdict by lap 44 but one can
say that Lewis thought it was Mark’s fault after the way he reacted.
It was in lap 47 that the stewards stated that they would not take any action regarding the incident involving Webber and Hamilton. Meanwhile Vettel was just 1.3 seconds behind Alonso now. Sebastian kept closing in on the leader and it seemed that the end
was going to be intense as he was just 9 tenths behind Fernando now. Both of the drivers were at their best at the Marina Bay circuit and it seemed that the pair was already 20 seconds ahead of Mark Webber by lap 52. Robert Kubica moved from 12th
to 11th place after passing Sebastian Buemi.
On the other hand, Button was also closing in on Mark Webber and was now just 1.9 seconds behind him. Kubica made another stunning move on Vitaly Petrov to gain the 10th place. Vettel set another fastest lap followed by another move by Kubica
on Massa this time before making two more moves in the following two laps and taking him to the 7th place by lap 56. Kubica was on fire as this was his fifth successful overtake in five laps.
With just 4 laps remaining, Sebastian Vettel is now just 6 tenths behind Fernando. This is as close as he got to the leader during the race. However, Fernando responded magnificently with a fastest lap and it seemed that Vettel might not be able to take
on the Spaniard by the end of the race.
In lap 60, one of the most amazing things happened as Heikki Kovalainen's car caught fire and he extinguished the fire at the back of his car himself. This was quite shocking but either way, he was out and everyone started thinking, “where are the marshalls?”
Vettel was right behind Fernando in the last lap. However, Fernando had a stronger run and won the race. The crowd went wild. The Ferrari fans were filled with joy and the team seemed like they had climbed a mountain.
A stunning drive from Ferrari and Red Bull as Mark Webber in third place followed them. Jenson finished in 4th place and this has changed the course of the championship, as Fernando Alonso is now just 11 points behind the championship leader Mark
Webber. Lewis Hamilton drops down to third place followed by Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button in 4th and 5th places. The gap between the top drivers has reduced yet again and this season is turning out to be a h**l of a treat.
