Question:

Lapse of insurance fiance pregnant?

Okay so my fiance recently got a better paying job as a supervisor for a Wasington Mutual branch. One problem is we just found out she was pregnant. I'm assuming there will be a lapse of insurance being she just started her new job. We aren't quite married yet but I would put her under my insurance if we did for the mean time until her's kicked in at her new job. Either way that would probably take time to get married at town hall then sign her up under my insurance, right? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do in this situation? Are there any programs maybe like cobra or something?

  1. Group insurances are not allowed to count pregnancy as pre-existing. Unless she needs to see a doctor before her new insurance takes effect, there is no reason to accept COBRA. But COBRA is her other option for coverage.

  2. I wouldn't assume there will be a lapse in her new coverage.  If there is, and it's just bureaucratic, it will be effective retro-actively to the date of hire.  If she isn't eligible for a longer time, her old job should have information on COBRA for her.

  3. It takes a week to get married at town hall.  First you go get the permit, then you wait three days, then you get marred.  That's what I suggest.
