Laptop and Desktop Pc connecting to internet

Question

I want to connect my laptop with our desktop pc so that they share the internet connection. We are connected to the net using a router from our cable company. I need to know how to connect them and then all of the settings for both computers to be configured at so the both connect. Thanks for your help.
