Laptop audio question?

when i connect my laptop to a stereo from headphone jack on laptop to microphone jack on sterero it doesn't sound go, there is no bass, but when i connect it from the headphone jack from the laptop to the video jacks in the back of the stereo you hear bass,. why is this

also what is the difference between 1/8" and 1/4" plugs to me they are the same

Microphone jacks are designed for signals with different dynamic range - impedence than Line-in inputs.

That's why Line-in, which matches better the laptop line out - works and microphone in does not.
