Laptop battery is not charging

Question

My mother plugged the laptop with the wrong adapter. Then suddenly it smells that there is an electrical fault. I've unplugged it. I try the laptop after few minutes. Everything seems okay but the charging of the battery is not working. There is always a need for plugging the adapter for it to work. I am hoping for your favorable response. Thank you very much.
