Laptop computer. Run on AC adaptor or battery?

I have just purchased my first laptop computer. When I am working on it at home, do I remain connected to the AC adaptor or run it on the battery. I'm concerned that running on the AC adaptor can overheat/overcharge the battery

at home we always run ours on the AC adaptor.  It is only when we go somewhere do we ever take it off the AC adaptor.  We have the same charge time/run time as when we first bought it (about a year ago)

There is a diode that prevents over-charging of the battery.
