Hello, I have a laptop and my internet doesn't want to work, but my AIM messenger works, which I find weird. I have my laptop connected to a wireless G router. So I have it wired and I got a wireless network. I'm connected but my internet doesn't work. I'm not sure if it's a firewall or something else. I use Mozilla Firefox and it says "Failed to Connect". I tried it on Internet Explorer too, but it just says "Page not found". I also tried restarting my laptop, but no luck. I turned off the modem and turned it back on. Nothing seems to work. Will someone please help me? Please and thank you!

  1. You may need to contact your ISP, if you're far from the modem, chances are that could be the problem, AIM could be working because it's simply a low amount of data being recieved to connect, If you're right next to it, there's a possibility that you have a firewall blocking you're connection to IE, and Firefox, but chances are that's not the problem, so I'm thinking it's some kind of virus or trojan blocking access to these programs, which they do often to keep you from downloading a trojan remover/virus scan, but who knows, it could just be a simple windows update you're missing, I would try everything then if all else fails, reformat your drive, if you have an antivirus try doing a full system scan, getting rid of everything possible, windows restore, check your temp files to see if they have firefox on the list, thats always something people never expect but it's the easiest to do... hope this helps, good luck.

  2. why spend money on a laptop when you can get it for free? just go to this site and complete a few quick tasks and they'll send you a sony vaio laptop at no charge!

  3. This sounds like a DNS problem. AIM probably works because it uses IP addresses, but when you try to go to a web site, you're using a URL such as http://www.yahoo.com

If your DNS settings aren't working, then you cannot do URLs.

Open Firefox or IE and try browsing to, say, http://172.18.126.38, which is www.aim.com

If you know how to get to your command prompt (Start > Run >cmd), type:

    ping 172.18.126.38 <enter>

    then

    ping www.yahoo.com <enter>

If the IP number works and the www.yahoo.com doesn't, then you have a DNS problem and your ISP can advise you what these settings should be.
