as long as you mainly use it when your computer is plugged in, it will drain the battery much more quickly.

They're really unnecessary. As long as you have your laptop on a hard flat, non porous surface like a table it's fine. That's why they have fans and they're designed to vent. Just keep it off of surfaces like rugs, beds, things of that nature.
