Laptop!!!???

Question

ok so i'm gonna be adopted by a familt that say that they arn't gonna let me do alot of stuff i used to in 2 days(i thought it was 5 but i guess i'm moving there on saturday) which ticks me off! and now i just find out their gonna take away my laptop! i tottaly NEED my laptop to keep in touch with my friends that live in japan! my laptop has so many pictures that i have drawn! and it has many stories that have made! and the reason why they said i can't have it anymore is because the think i'm "to young" for a laptop! i'm 14 as well.

what should i do??!!

First you should stop and think if this is the family you want to spend the rest of your life in.  If it is then maybe you can negotiate the computer with them.  If this is not a family for you then you must talk to your caseworker NOW before it is too late and you hate life.   I don't have my family and I will tell you that I would give up a laptop any day for my parents to love me and want to be in my life.

Yeah its your laptop and 14 is not a problem at all as long as you aren't putting suggestive photos of yourself on the net or something lol.

This is really tough, who is organising this whole adoption; do you have a counsellor or someone who you can speak to about your concerns?

And explain to them that you need some ground rules regarding this transition; you will respect them and their rules if they meet you halfway and respect yours. At the end of the day, possession IS nine tenths of the law; if they didn't pay for it the can't take it from you I am afraid. You have a better chance of getting through to them when super-calm and rational.. so don't scream and swear lol (tried that...) good luck

Is there a social worker, court advocate, or social worker who is working on the adoption?  If so, I suggest that you speak to one of them about your concerns  That person could help to make your adoptive parents see how important your laptop is to you.  If there is not a person representing you in the adoption (sad!), speak to your high school counselor and explain the problem.  Perhaps you and your adoptive parents could have a counseling session at your school.

Oh, my dear Sasha!  I am so sorry your new ADOPTERS are doing this to you.

Adoption, it's so wonderful, isn't it.

Well, first off, while you still have time, can you get yourself a Google account and upload your files?  Or upload them to a free email account somewhere?  Just get them someplace where they can be stored so that you won't risk losing them.

Once your in your new prison er um loving adoptive home, you can see what kind of arrangements your new wardens have in store for you.  Perhaps they want to just limit your laptop usage so that you can "bond" with them (you know how some adopters are).

In time, you'll probably get your laptop back, or have use of a computer in their home.  Either way, at least your files will be stored online and safe, and you can access them when you get a chance.

I'm sorry, and good luck with your new arrangement...stay strong, I hope they are not too horrible, as they already seem to be.

I had my first laptop when I was like, 11 or 12. 14 is not too young.

Sit them down and explain to them why you need it, but make sure you do it in a calm and mature way. (ie, don't throw a tantrum and storm out if you don't get your way.)

If they see that you can act maturely about the situation, and compromise with them, they're more likely to listen to your point of view.

Maybe you should just calm down.  After you move in with them and you get use to each other, they may ease up if you can prove you are responsible.

maybe you should sit down and talk with them, and explain that you need it, even if you just get to use it once a day or something, just try and reason with them, but make sure you keep calm and show how mature you can be towards the situation

Ask to negotiate rules on its use.  Like, you'll only use it for an hour a day, after you've finished your other homework and done exercise.  You'll only use it in an open area where they can look over your shoulder and see what you're writing -- a lot of adults are concerned that you might be having inappropriate conversations or that child predators might be after you.  You should also load up your pictures and stories on a CD and give it to a friend to keep hold of, in case your laptop is lost or stolen anyway.  You can look into online storage, too: there are ways to do that, like AOL lets members store a lot online.  Then you should ask the agency arranging the adoption to speak to the parents and tell them that 14 is not too young for a laptop, and that it's important for you to maintain your relationships.  However, realize that they may want you to interact with them, instead of spending all your time on the computer.  If you act mature, you may get it back sooner.  Presumably, being adopted is better than what you have now, so try to get along.

Are they taking it away for good?  If so, then that is wrong.  However, if you talk calmly to them, and set up an area where they can see what you are doing, and you limit the time that you spend online, then maybe they will allow you to use it.  Why don't you try to agree upon a time each day that you can use it.
