Laptop startup problem. Vista laptop refuses to start on reboot - says there is an error and when

Vista laptop refuses to start on reboot - says there is an error and when I ran repair, memory check and attempted to take back to last check point, no joy. I upgraded realplayer yesterday and have not rebooted since - otherwise no real changes to explain it. Any ideas very gratefully received.
