Laptop upgrading question?

I have a Toshiba Tecra S1, and my friend who's in to computer says that I should upgrade the processor, but I heard that processors in laptops can't be upgraded, so I was wondering if thats true or not. And he said the ram needs to be upgraded, (whatever that means). And the graphics need to be updated. so can anyone tell me what can be done to upgrade it.

Thanks in advance.

  1. For most laptops, the processor is socketed and can be upgraded with another processor that uses the same socket and with speed timings that the motherboard supports. (If you go to the manufacturer's web site, you might be able to determine what other processor speeds they have used with your laptop's motherboard. If you have a model 5712, let's say, look at the 5715, 5721, etc. If they appear to be the same machine, you may have your answer. Changing the CPU, however, often requires at least partial disassembly of the laptop.

Memory is usually easy to upgrade and can be done through a small access panel on the bottom. (Not always though.) He probably meant you could use more memory.

The graphics chip is usually soldered onto the motherboard in laptops and is not upgradeable.

  2. Too bad your friend actually seems to just know enough about computers to make others laugh. Laptop CPUs are often upgradable, but there'll be a pretty minimal gulf in speed between yours and the best one that will both fit your socket and work with your BIOS and jumpering/FSBs. Not worth the hours of labor tearing the thing apart and tracking down a five year old CPU. Just not.

The video chip on a machine like that is soldered down to the motherboard- there's utterly no upgrade path. That's okay, though, because yours should be still fine for 2D business graphics tasks like scrolling.

The RAM? Yes, that can and likely should be upgraded. You'll see a slot on the bottom of most laptops. Remove the covering and you'll see one or more modules. Put in another one (DDR1 @ 266MHZ or higher ), and you'll have more RAM. You can have up to 2GB, though 1GB is probably a good pick for your machine.

  3. .I Have personally heard that a lot!,I had a tecra 750.Am Sorry to say that The only thing you can upgrade is the r.a.m,On most morden laptops. This helps to run huge applications faster!,By reducing hard disk virtual memory writes to the hard drive.

  4. with your S1 the only part that can really be upgraded is the ram and hard drive,  even then dont expect major performance increases, some processors in laptops can be upgraded see below, but due to the architecture of your laptop you'd be better to sell it and put the money towards one with a dual core processor

  5. your ram can be upgraded the processor  and video card are built into the motherboard and can not be replaced with info from Friends like that who needs enemies
