  1. Three real possibilities -

    1. Most likely is an incorrectly functioning battery, you said you decided to fix an old laptop so when was it last charged? If it was many months ago then the batteries in the pack are flat, they will seem to charge for a short while and show that they have a full charge  but in reality they have perhaps only 1 or 2% of their "new state" full capacity and it is this information that keeps refreshing giving the illusion that batteries are recharging. Does it run on the batteries only? I am guessing that perhaps you only get a few minutes if that. (see also point 3)

    2. It is unlikely the power input socket is broken if you get the charging light all the time when it is plugged in and not running. If you just need to wiggle it (rather than almost bend it into place) then the pin is worn, if you have to push it hard and bend it up or down then the socket has come unsoldered from the board. This is not so easy to fix as the solder points are often awkward to get at.

    3. If it is a really old laptop are you loading XP with SP2 or even SP3? Many older laptops had instant battery failures updating to SP2, what you need is a BIOS update and possibly a hotfix/patch from the laptop manufacturers website. This can give the illusion that the battery is flat and not charging (see also point 1 !) when it is the BIOS that has a problem with the battery management in Windows XP.

    hope this helps

  2. hi well if it can charge even if it's off and you have to wiggle the power cord a bit, i'd be inclined to reinstall any power monitoring software thats is unique to the laptops manufacturer like all software it can become corrupt and mis-report,

  3. your power supply socket has snapped of the motherboard....

  4. I think you will find your charger for the laptop is incorrect, and doesn't deliver enough power. Check the power output of the adapter and compare to the manual, or online, or may even be on the base of the laptop. had the exact same issue myself. I'd picked up the wrong charger, Doh!!

    Best of Luck

  5. it cold your batter in your laptop you tried to bring to computer shop see what do they have to said
