Question:

Large chainring making noise?

I have noticed a noise...a popping sound coming from my road bike. I recently noticed it seems to come only when the chain is on the largest ring (front), and one of the smaller back gears, and only when I'm pushing with my right foot. It pops just as the right pedal passes 20-30 degrees from the crest, and I'm pushing pretty hard. Could this be a chain issue, as it happens when I'm putting alot of pressure on the crank, or more likely an issue with the ring itself?

  1. It is more likely a problem with the chain ring.  Check it for a worn or chipped tooth.  If it was the chain it would happen in other gears.

  2. I agree, check the chain ring around where the chain connects when the pedal is is that position.  I have a small pop on mine when the pedal is around the 2 o'clock position on the right, but it does it on all 3 chain rings so I think it is in the bottom bracket.  I am going to turn the cranks 180 deg to see if it goes to the other side.
