Could large community compost collection sites be used to produce hydrogen, like sewer ponds do?

  1. yes very possible because the compost creates hydrogen naturally just like sewer ponds do.


  2. It could if it is given the right conditions.  There would have to be a collection device, and the collection would have to be contained so the gases couldn't escape.

Most modern landfills are designed to collect and utilize the methane gas that comes from the decay of garbage.  The problem is that cars and power plants need to be heavily modified to utilize the gas.  Another downside is that there just wouldn't be enough fuel to put a significant dent in our fuel requirements.  There is however a way to turn garbage into a fuel.  Check out the Popular Science article below..

  4. Most any kind of biomass can be used to make bio-diesel or ethanol.

    Then the town could run some of their buses, cars, trucks, etc. on the product.
