Question:

Large hauling rigs and suvs?

How many of you are hanging on to your current tow vehicles, (not going for any kind of upgrade) and your suvs because of the current gas prices?? Have you traded off SUV's and gone to a smaller vehicle?

We passed on buying a new tow vehicle this year and are keeping what we have.

  1. im confused... what does this have to do with horses?

  2. I still have my Diesel pickup, but just three weeks ago I bought a car so I can drive that around. For what I pay in fuel for my pickup I can afford to buy and gas up a car

  3. I have a 2002 big truck which doesn't get driven a whole lot - mostly towing, hay/supply getting, and for 4WD in the snow.  It's only got 30,000 miles on it.  It replaced a truck that was 17 years old, and I'm hoping this truck lasts as long.  No upgrades or downgrades here.  My 2000 trailer is in great shape, too.

I also have a car that gets 32 mpg and I drive it about 24,000 miles/year.

  4. We have an expedition right now and are looking to upgrade hopefully sometime this year for our two horse exiss event. just not enough horsepower for what we need. fortunately we have other cars to use for non horsey transportation so our decision isnt based on gas prices.

  5. I drive 30 miles to work every day so I'd LOVE to downsize but I need my SUV for hauling, plus I need the 4WD.  So I'm hanging on to it.

  6. If I'm only hauling 1 or 2 horses to a show, its actually cheaper for me to get someone else to do it! I'll only go out if I can put at least 3 in my trailer - its a 6 horse.  My truck only gets about 7 mpg - ouch.

  7. Well we still tow our horse trailer with our 3500 Dodge Cummings Dually, which of course is a diesel and prices are very high! We have cut back on going to shows and are showing mainly at the local arenas due to diesel prices!

  8. Well, after hitting that moose this past winter & totaling my RAV4, I did get another one.  V-6 so the gas isn't too bad ~cough~

But, my husband did get rid of his Tundra pickup (why he needed it to begin with is beyond me) & we still have our Dodge Ram that we use to pull the trailer & it's only a couple of years old.  We have been staying close to home lately, but with summer here it's really hard.  Our boys are wanting to go places, but they are good about understanding the way things are even at their age.  We still go fishing & do "some" of our usual outings, but not as often.

In our neck of the woods, regular gas is running $4.65 & diesel is running $4.76.  We get decent mileage with the diesel though, about 20 not pulling the trailer.

We usually hold on to our rigs until they start nickel & diming us, but now with the

ridiculous prices of vehicles added to the ridiculous fuel prices, we are sticking with what we have.

Our trailer is a Featherlite 8546 model gooseneck that we ordered open inside like a stock trailer.
