Large "garden spider's" web?

Question

why does a garden spider build a large web at night, and disassemble it in the morning, then rebuild it the next night? Does he ingest the web, to be used again?

Yes, you're right, the spider eats the web so as to not waste precious energy. Leaving the web up in the day risks losing it and since it is a valuable resource why not just eat it.

By the way these same spiders will quickly move positions of their web if it is broken a couple times, as happens when it straddles a pathway or driveway. They seem to quickly learn when something is a waste of energy.
