Larry Brown latest to be linked with Minnesota Timberwolves coaching job – NBA Update
Larry Brown, the veteran NBA head coach, has emerged as the latest name set for an interview with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves have been on the chase of a new coach since firing Kurt Rambis.
Larry Brown has been in the news this week after he was first reported to be in the frame for an assistant coaching role at the Boston Celtics. The Celtics have a spot open on their bench with Lawrence Frank departing to Detroit
Pistons and Brown is believed to be willing to give it a go. So far though, Doc Rivers’ is reportedly reluctant hiring a coach older, and much more experienced, than himself as an assistant.
On the Minnesota front, Brown is just one of the names thrown into the mix at this point, although he does have ties with Timberwolves General Manager David Kahn. It would seem strange that Kahn is considering Brown for the job
after he has publicly expressed his desire for the new coach to be someone who plays at a fast tempo that would suit the talented roster at his disposal.
Larry Brown is definitely not someone that fits the criteria. The coach is renowned for his defence first, slow, grinding basketball and has not shown any inclination to change his methods over a long career. Brown has extensive
coaching experience at both the NCAA and NBA level. He won the NCAA Championship and also led the Detroit Pistons to an NBA World title in 2004.
Brown’s reputation has since suffered and the coach was fired by the Charlotte Bobcats in the early stages of last season. In total, he has coached 9 NBA teams and insiders expect the number to stay the same. The tipping factor
that is likely to go against Larry is his record of impatience with younger players, and Minnesota have one of the youngest rosters in the league.
However, there will still be an interview, with David Kahn determined to be thorough in his search for Rambis’ successor. Minnesota have already interviewed a large number of coaches that include Bernie Bickerstaff, Terry Porter,
Don Nelson and Rick Adelman.
The Timberwolves search is likely to continue and sources familiar with the situation believe that there will be a few more interviews to follow, ever after Larry. The franchise is looking to turn a page after two disastrous seasons
under the stewardship of Kurt Rambis, the last of which saw them finish at the rock bottom of NBA.
If the Timberwolves can get a quality head coach in the off season, they have the pieces in place to get back on track in NBA.
