Larry Fitzgerald trying to keep himself out of the Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback issue – NFL News
It seems that All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is keeping his cards close to his chest on the matter of who will be the regular quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals.
It does not mean that Fitzgerald might not have any say about this issue. Being an eight-season veteran for the Cardinals, Fitzgerald can put forward his opinions.
While talking to KTAR in Arizona on Monday, June 25, 2012, Fitzgerald talked about various matters of the team including his offseason training and about rookie wide receiver Michael Floyd.
The competition for the regular quarterback spot is between Kevin Kolb and John Skelton. When asked about who will be the better choice for the quarterback position, he said:
“That’s really a question that Coach [Ken] Whisenhunt can probably answer. John McNulty [Quarterbacks Coach] can answer better.”
Fitzgerald is clearly not prepared to give his stance. He does emphasise on focusing on his own input to the team. Fitzgerald said
“I really just try to stay out of it as much as I possibly can. Just try to make my plays and do what I am coached to do and be responsible for that.”
He thinks that eventually the one with more consistency will get the role.
“The cream rises to the top. I know by Week 1 when we go out there we’ll have our guy. We’ll be supportive of that person,” he said.
Kolb joined the Cardinals from Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. He played four seasons for Eagles.
Last season, he played nine games getting nine touchdowns and eight interceptions and also covered 1,955 yards. He got a quarterback rating of 81.1.
On the other hand, Skelton has played two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) after starting his career with the Cardinals in 2010.
Last year, he played eight games and covered 1,913 yards while getting 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He got a quarterback rating of 68.9.
So as far as stats are concerned, both can get the starting role. Fitzgerald also has no concerns with both the players.
Fitzgerald is considered as one of the best receivers in the NFL at present, but this consideration can be challenged by many, as other stars in the league have also shined.
Players like Calvin Johnson are coming up with big plays. He was undoubtedly the best receiver in the league last season. So Fitzgerald needs good support from his quarterback to reach the top again.
