Larry Jones preparing his stars for the New Year
Trainer Larry Jones will be gearing up the stars of his barn for the New Year, as he has not raced the cream of his barn since mid-year this year.
Brereton C. Jones homebred, Mark Valeski hasn’t started in any race after winning the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park back in May, but Jones is working the son of Proud Citizen to a return to races, as it was evident on 6 December, when the Kentucky bred turned in a bullet three-furlong move in 36 1/5 seconds at Fair Grounds Race Course.
Larry Jones was happy with the work he turned in, especially not registering any move since winning the Peter Pan Stakes on 12 May.
"I was really pleased with the way he went yesterday and he's really looking great today," Jones said. "He really seems to be responding well. I'll probably give him another work in another six or seven days or so and then we'll try to get him back on a regular schedule."
On the other hand, the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winning filly, Believe You Can, another Brereton C. Jones homebred will be eyeing a return to races next year.
The 3-year-old filly by Proud Citizen, Believe You Can, last raced in the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes, and finished third to winner, Zo Impressive, at Belmont Park on 23 June, 2012.
Also the winner of Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks, Believe You Can turned in her first work after a longtime, when Jones worked her on the same three-eighths, which she accomplished in 37 1/5 seconds.
Out of El Fasto by El Prado, Believe You Can, won the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes as a juvenile at Belmont Park, when she defeated Perennial Song to cover the six furlong distance in 1 minute and 11.20 seconds.
The Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra winner, Summer Applause, was also on the work tab for her return for trainer Bret Calhoun, as she has not raced since finishing fourth to winner Believe You Can in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on 4 May, 2012.
The 3-year-old Harlan’s Holiday filly also worked at Fair Grounds, turning in five furlongs in 59 seconds flat.
