Larry Merchant believes Mayweather should pick Pacquiao or Alvarez instead of Guerrero – Boxing News
Larry Merchant, HBO analyst, believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. should go for a fight against Filipino fight king Manny Pacquiao or Saul Alvarez, instead of accepting WBC interim welterweight titlist Robert Guerrero’s challenge.
Guerrero defeated Andre Berto this Saturday via unanimous decision to move a step further towards facing a better foe. Surprisingly, Guerrero called out unbeaten American fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Merchant spoke to examiner.com regarding the scenario, asserting that Guerrero still needs more time to prove himself worthy of facing Mayweather, who stands as the best welterweight today.
“I hope that Mayweather is shooting for bigger game [than Guerrero], which would be Pacquiao and possibly Alvarez. Beating Berto is a very good win, but it doesn’t automatically put you in that game,” he said.
Not just Merchant, many others believe Guerrero is no match for Mayweather. The American fighter has defeated the best in his business while Guerrero is just climbing the steps of success. He still needs a lot more to prove in order to get a fight against
Mayweather.
On the other hand, there is no news of Mayweather going for a fight anytime soon. He was initially being linked up with former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao for a super-fight but nothing has worked out yet. In other words, Pacquiao vs. Mayweather,
the highly anticipated super-fight is still not on the cards.
While Pacquiao is going for a fourth fight against long time rival Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather has nothing to offer to fans yet.
For now, Merchant believes Guerrero stands no match for Mayweather. Mayweather went head to head against Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto earlier this year to win via unanimous decision. Although Mayweather won, his form was not impressive. It was the first
time the unbeaten American suffered a bleeding nose in the ring.
According to most analysts, Mayweather and Pacquiao are already at the verge of retirement and so they do not have the choice of fighting younger opponents. Most of them believe the best way out for Pacquiao and Mayweather is to get the super-fight done
and hang their gloves before they are defeated by the new generation.
