Larry Nelson not considered for Ryder Cup team captaincy
The American Ryder Cup team has once again become a victim of the European Ryder Cup team’s brutality, as the team from the eastern side of the Atlantic got the best of the American line-up.
According to the details, The Professional Golf Association of America has made changes to its team, with the announcement of the new captain for the squad.
Larry Nelson is one of those people who were not considered for the appointment. It has been seen in the past as well, that the pioneer of American golf has been neglected by selectors.
Nelson should have been given a shot for the American Ryder Cup team captaincy years ago. He has three major championship titles to his name, which include two PGA Championships. He has a decent record of the Ryder Cup record.
Former American Ryder Cup team captain, Raymond Floyd, said that Nelson was the most deserving person to be picked as the captain.
Nelson spoke of his expectations and said that a number of people assured him all this time, telling him that they were hopeful he would get the position.
Nelson said in his interview, "I've heard that so much, since '95 basically. But this time it did seem like. ... I was thrown into the mix and it seemed like that was being kicked around a little bit.
"So we went through the whole emotion of yes, this would be great; looks like it might happen, to no, it's not going to happen. I'm certainly disappointed. Not devastated, but disappointed I was not named captain".
Nelson is a great inspiration for young golfers. He put aside his career for the cause of his country. The 65-year-old American served his nation in the Vietnam War. He continued with his golf career after he returned.
These days, it is impossible to find someone who can give up their ambitions for country’s sake. Golfers of the current generation usually start playing at a very young age.
The World Golf Hall of Famer said that golf is a sport in which everybody loves the winner. There is no support for the underdog, he added.
Lanny Wadkins, who is another hall-of-famer, was a little more biased towards Watson when he gave his views on captaincy for the Ryder Cup team.
Wadkins said that is not at all a bad move to appoint Watson as captain of the team, because it could be a gateway for Nelson. He continued that if Watson performs well, then they will be asking for support of older golfers and hence Nelson will get the
chance to take a crack at the appointment.
Nelson should have been considered for the captaincy. He has all the shots in the book and boasts comparatively better results on the Ryder Cup than his compatriot, Watson.
