Larry Nelson hopes to be the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain
Larry Nelson might be the next Ryder Cup captain for Team USA. Although nobody has asked him as yet formally, but his name has been floating around for some time.
Since the shocking defeat from the Europeans, people have started some serious questioning regarding the reasons behind such a poor track record in the Ryder Cup recently.
Many people in newspapers and on television have been making a case for Larry Nelson. Nelson is currently 65 and it is time that he finally gets his chance.
Considering the current run of form, Nelson will probably be a perfect choice for the 2014 Ryder Cup. Larry is not only a three time major winner, he is a war veteran, carrying the US flag in Vietnam but he has also the best record on the Ryder Cup.
The war veteran has 9-3-1 record in the Ryder Cup and he might be able to inspire Team USA the way Olazabal did this Sunday at Medinah.
Nelson has made it clear that he would accept the Captain’s responsibility happily for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
"It would still be a tremendous honor for me," Nelson said. "The only thing that surprises me is the number of people who have said they would love to see me be Ryder Cup captain at some point. I don't know if it has any value, but at least it's flattering".
PGA of America has not approached Nelson yet, instead they have Fred Couples and a few other names in mind.
Considering the pressure PGA of America would be in and the fact that many pundits are calling his name, this might force the authorities to re-think over their current contenders.
"They need to think about what the process and how to go about it," Nelson said. "If it wasn't broke, I would not say 'fix it.' In that regard, with our record in the last nine Ryder Cups, something needs to be done".
Nelson critics argue about his age but he will not be playing. He will be there to inspire the team. The veteran is the only two time PGA Championship winner from the stroke play era who has not captained Team USA at the Ryder Cup as yet.
