Lasith Malinga announces retirement from Test Cricket
The Sri Lankan speedster, Lasith Malinga, has announced his retirement from the five day, Test format of the game to lengthen his international career.
Malinga issued a press release stating he is fit enough but he wants to cater to his degenerative knee injury cautiously.
He said; “The injury was a career-threatening injury and my orthopaedic surgeon was of the opinion that given his experience with other professional athletes in Australia I was very fortunate to play again. I have since been advised
by the national team physiotherapist and my orthopaedic consultant that my condition will deteriorate when fielding or bowling for prolonged periods.”
The quick bowler has decided to quit test cricket right after when he was accused to prefer Indian Premier League over Sri Lankan national team.
The slingy pacer confirmed that he is available for the shorter versions of the game.
"I have realised that the heavy workload of Test cricket, which requires a fast bowler to be able to bowl more than 15 overs, sometimes on consecutive days, could lead to permanent injury. I have carefully considered my options
and have decided that not playing Test cricket will help me achieve my goal of representing Sri Lanka in the 2012 World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup." The fast bowler added.
Since he started his test career against Australia at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin, in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 on July 1, 2004, he has developed himself as a reliable bowler of Sri Lanka’s test side.
Malinga is effective and lethal against world-class batsmen with his burning pace and his spot-on bouncers.
He has refined his yorkers immensely, his toe-crushers have been very troublesome for batsmen in the recent World Cup and the on-going IPL season.
The pacer has cemented his place in the Sri Lankan team as their main attack bowler. He was an efficient player of the longer version of the game who was lethal for his team to dominate the opposition.
Malinga has participated in 30 test matches for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, grabbing 101 wickets for his team with average of 33.15 and an economy rate of 3.85.
In the current IPL season, Malinga is playing from the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians side, he has taken 11 wickets so far in the four matches the team has played.
