I think you may be referring to snares. Maybe?

A  snare is a length of wire with a  sliding loop.The snare is set on a known animals trail. It is set so the animal will enter the loop head first but will not allow the shoulders to pass. The noose or snare tightens around the animals neck.The more the animal struggles the tighter the snare gets. Next morning go and collect breakfast.

Cruel but effective in survival situations.
