  1. All you ever wanted to know about XTI (and probably much more):

... if you don't want to read all 30 pages of the review, detailed analysis and samples, just go here for bottom line (pros+cons included):

Then same thing about D40 - all you wanted to know and much more:

... and again if 26 pages of review is too much for you, jump to a conclusion page:

Then for a quick feature comparison side by side:

Then last but not least - go to a camera store and handle both in person, because you are going to be the one using that camera, not all the people who would suggest you one brand over another. They are both great cameras, so it's simply a matter of preference for you and for anyone else who would suggest one over another. So pick one YOU like!

    Good luck,

    LEM.

  2. The XTi is a better camera than the D40 and correspondingly more expensive.

The correct comparison is between the D40 and Rebel XT or the Canon D60 and the Nikon XTi.

For purposes of answering your question, if you like both the XTi and the D40 and both work well in your hand, then get the XTi, it's just more camera and megapixels than the D40.

Really, you have to decide for yourself by handling these cameras.  You can do feature comparisons to death, but these are all good choices, so the ultimate decision comes down to which one you like better period, whether that's because of the feel, the build quality, the reputation or whatever.

But between the two cameras you listed, the XTi is more camera, even though the D40 is good.  If it were the XT and the D40, I'd say, get the D40.

You've been thinking about this and posting here over and over again.  Make a decision and start taking photos, instead of agonizing over it.
