Last chance for Lloyd Saltman at the South African Open
Lloyd Saltman is in a ‘do or die’ situation at the South African Open Championship. The Scot ranks 191 in the Race to Dubai standings and only a miracle can save his tour card next season.
A victory can only save his tour card and, for now, he has given himself a decent chance by carding a 66 on the weather delayed second round.
Saltman turned pro in 2007 and it has been a struggle for him since then. A 131st place finish in the Race to Dubai standings last year meant that he had limited playing options this season.
A victory will propel him up in the standings but he knows it will be extremely difficult, considering that he is five strokes behind the leader, Henrik Stenson.
“It’s a sort-of last-chance-saloon for me, last event of the year. The goal is to win, so I’m looking forward to having some fun over the weekend,” he said.
Currently, Saltman is just enjoying his time in South Africa. He is playing decent golf, and loves playing here. Last year, he finished 9th in this particular event.
Saltman has an outside chance over the weekend. He is driving the ball along the way with some accuracy. The Scot’s long distant drives are his pluses. If he is to succeed on this golf course, he must continue to hit the ball a mile.
He stated, "I would say I’m one of the longer ones off the tee, and this definitely falls into my hands this week. Definitely down here in Joburg as well, where the ball flies for me".
“I hit it high and long, so I can take some aggressive lines on par fives and really capitalise on them, which I’ve been doing. That’s kind of where the scores are coming from as well,” Saltman said.
Edinburgh-born golfer must keep up pace with the leaderboard. A good round on Saturday will do the trick for him.
Currently, Henrik Stenson leads the South African Open, the Swede shot a bogey free round of 65 on Friday to lead the tournament after the second round.
