Last chance for Luis Arias to qualify for 2012 London Olympics – Boxing news
The American national professional boxer Luis Arias, who has been the winner of National PAL, Ringside, Under-19 and Junior Olympic championships, has his last chance to qualify for a possible shot at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Middleweight contender Arias, who is also the two-time winner of the USA Boxing National Championship titles, has not been so impressive since his last two competitions at professional level.
Arias lost two out of three fights in his career. He faced the first loss of his career fighting against Jesus Castro on December 19 at the Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic in 1977. He then lost a ninth-round knockout decision against Jesus in their 10-round
competitive bout. The second loss came to Arias’ way at the time when he lost a second round knockout decision against Fulgencio Obelmejias at the Caracas, Venezuela in August in 1979.
However, Arias cannot afford to lose another bout to make his place for the 2012 London Games.
If Arias does not win his upcoming fight, which is going to be held at the end of this week at the Taft Masonic Centre in Cincinnati, it can cost him a lot.
If Arias wins this bout, he will be sent to prepare for the US Olympic Team Trials. Arias could be in the US Olympic team leads if he gets through these US trials successfully.
Arias spoke to the press saying, “I've got a lot of boxing to take care of, but this is what I've been waiting on. This is the whole dream. It's right here. It's do or die.”
Another American boxing prospect Luis Feliciano, who fights at 123 pounds, has already placed his name for the Olympic trials. He said, “I have to win this one. There's no other choice.”
He further said, “I've been training hard. My weight is really good. We might have to fight six times, but it's something we're used to. I doubt all those guys show up, but regardless of that we're aiming to fight five or six times. We know what we've got
to do.”
However, Arias’ chances to qualify for 2012 London Olympic are bright because he is not going to prove his class for the first time as he has already beaten four of the seven boxers who have qualified for the trials at 165 pounds.
