  1. well i remember wen i had to go through that just use ur best friend not makin it as a motivation so u can make the team for both of u and do ur best try hard and i wish  u all the best good luck!!

  2. Don't be afraid to hit the floor for a ball.  Be good in every position, not just front or back, rotate.  And work on a killer serve.  Good luck!  About your friend, that stinks, totally.

  3. be loud and play hard! hussel, shag balls, do anything to stand out and get the coach to notice you. you can even wear bright colors, like neon socks and maybe a frilly hair ribbon so that your coach will remember you. good luck!  =]

  4. you need to be agressive. at my school im not even out of junior high, but im playing varsity with a bunch of high schoolers. our coach tells us to have the mindset that the next ball is mine. and about ur friend. tell her that she doesnt need volleyball. there are tons of things shes still good at.

  5. I am trying out for high school volleyball as well, (I am a freshmen) and we have final cuts today also)

Here are some tips that I think would make you stand out....

*Run to everything, like when your coach says to shag balls, or to get to different drills or come to her, don't walk even if everyone else is walking.

*Wear a shirt with your name on it

*Have your hair OUT of your face and don't keep playing with it.

*When you are getting ready to pass or play defense in the back row, or for any drill don't even rest your hands on your knees.

*Get to tryouts early, and if possible start warming up on your own. Don't stand around and talk with friends.

*Be really really loud on the court. Say things like back, mine, short, long, ready and etc. reeeeealllllyy loud. The coach will definetly appreciate this.

*Cheer on your teamates when they are doing something, and you are watching. If you get a good set, give the setter some props and tell her that she gave you a nice set.

*When you are sprinting or running in drills, try to finish first, or near the front. If you are not a good runner, than just try your hardest and don't slow down. Even though you are not the best runner, you can still show that you are working the hardest.

*If the coach tells you do fix something, like the way you serve, then don't roll your eyes. Do it the way she wants it, and do not go back to your old ways. If she tells you to work on something, say, "Thanks, I will" or something so she knows that you are listening.

*On a drink break, get as quick a drink as possible then get back out there and do wall spikes or pass with a friend or something so that you are ready.

*If you think that the ball is going out, go to the line and then decide, don't just assume. Sometimes you could be wrong.

*After blocking, remember to step back and be ready to pass if it comes back.

Ok that was pretty much all I can think of at the moment. I hope you make the team!!! For your friend, I would just listen to her and try to tell her that she tried her hardest, and at least she made it through some cuts and she tried her best. Invited her to the movies or to your house to have fun often to get her mind off of it. You could join a team that you don't have to tryout for with her. Like in Michigan where I live, we have AAU leagues, where everyone can play and we have weekend tournaments and go to states and stuff! It is really fun! Good luck!!!

  6. say "hey coach did you like my serve or how are you today" Make small talk with your coach and that might be able to see that you have good intentions on being in the team and talk to your "teammates and assistant coaches"

  7. Not sure if this is too late for you, but maybe it can help some others in try outs.

I used to coach HS vball, and during tryouts we aren't necessarily looking for the best players--we're looking for the best potential.

Since you've already made 2 rounds of cuts, you must be athletic and have the basics down. Once we're past that, what I would look for during final cut is coachability and attitude.

coachability means listening to the coach and then following directions. Maybe you don't understand why i'm asking (and it's usually ok to ask me why, if time allows), but you still have to put it into action.

attitude is not whining all the time, not moaning when I tell you to run another lap or serve 10 more times, it is hustling to shag the balls, and being quick back after a drink break. It is also enjoying being out there and not looking to add to your list of things to show off to prospective colleges.

I'd also mention that there are other factors, such as returning players and filling out positions, that you don't have any control over. If you're a great player but not a setter, I may have to cut you to take someone else who can set, even if she's not as good in other areas.

As far as your friend, that does suck. If you make the team, volleyball will take a bunch of your time and you won't see her as much, but if you continue to make time for her you'll get past this and she'll find other things to occupy her time when you're at practice. Hopefully she'll come to the games and cheer you on, and maybe you two can practice and play outside of school so she'll be better prepared next year--I have definitely taken kids the 2nd year that didn't make the cut first year.

    Good luck!
