  1. jockey might be ill or injured

  2. There are numerous reasons but none are psychological. The Jockey Club stewards would punish trainers/owners if they played games like that.

    The reasons are =

    lateness of booked jockey,

    illness of booked jockey,

    refusal to ride,

another meeting is called off. If the stable has a retainer on a jockey sent to Haydock and it is called off then that jockey will take over the rides at Sandown because he is retained by the stable.

  3. The jockey might be ill and cannot be able to race the next race!

  4. Last minute jockey changes are usually due to the declared jockey being ill, injured or stuck in traffic.  Don't forget that declarations are made 24 hours before the race takes place and a lot can happen to a jockey in that time.  If a jockey fails to turn up at a race meeting without good reason, he will be brought up before the stewards at the next meeting he attends to explain himself.

  5. Sometimes a jockey will refuse to ride a horse after it warms up, meaning he/she thinks the horse shouldn't run but the stewards won't scratch the horse.

A jockey could get banged up in the starting gate and is unable to ride. Or got banged up in the previous race.

If a horse is scratched at the gate the jockey can usually catch a ride back to the paddock with the ambulance or the tractor moving the gate. Or opt to cut across the infield.
