Last night I saw a security guard plant a metal dot on a pole from a pen-like device. What is that?

My friend tried taking it off but it was really stuck on there. Just curious as to what it is.

It is a patrol point the security officer has to check while making his rounds. The button is logged in a computer as to location. The officer has a "pipe" that he presses on the button. It records the date an time that he was in the area. The computer software and equipment is call Guard Tour.........

It is probably a small GPS type device that records when and where the guard passes.
