  2. One time when I was out for a jog before the sun came up an opossum snarled at me as I startled it by the side of the trail. Scared the c**p outta me.

  4. I think foxes growl in a higher pitch.  It was probably just a dog you couldn't see

  10. maybe it was a dog you just didn't see it because it was dark and i think red foxes can growl.

  11. Red foxes certainly can growl, but they rarely growl at humans - they just run away. It would only growl at you if was cornered and warning you that it will defend itself if attacked. Rabid animals are made unnaturally aggressive by the disease (you don't state which country you are in, so I don't know if you're in a place that has rabies or not), but a rabid fox would not just growl at you from the shadows - it would come towards you, possibly walking unsteadily and acting erratically. Many animals growl - if you're in the US it may have been a coyote, for example - but the most likely culprit is a domestic dog. It may have been behind a fence in someone's garden or something, which is why you couldn't see it.

  13. the only time i ever heard a fox growl was when by bf had caught one in a trap! their normal sounds is almost like a bird! you prolly heard a dog!
