  1. idk. what's shock? is it like chlorine?

  2. You will have to know how many gallons of water are in the pool. I have an 11K gal. pool. I only use one bag of shock at a time. The place were you got the pool or your instructions, should tell you how many gallons the pool is. Once you find that out, you can find out from your local pool store the right amount to use. 3 pounds may be correct. Also,,, I have found that the chemicals I buy at Sam's or Walmart are not as strong as the ones the pool store sells. I only buy from the pool store....even if they are higher than the others. I used the chemicals from Sam's one year and I had a problem all year with algae. Switched to the stuff from Leslie's Pool Supply and have not had a problem since.

  3. How big is the pool? Is it rectangular 18' x 45', if so how deep?  Or is it round 18' diameter and 45" deep?  If you go to any pool store and give them the dimensions they will tell you how much shock to put in and how often, if you go to Walmart they won't.

  4. Hi there. I'm not over experienced in pools, but I know a little. That sounds like way too much shock!!!! You shouldn't shock it unless it really needs it. DON'T do it in the sun! You should only have to shock it about once a month(if that) depending on it's use. The bag of shock should tell you how much to use for the volume of your pool. Put some pool water in a basin, let it set until dissolved. Put it in at evening time and swish around. It's always been a good way for me. Good luck

  5. You should have your water tested every year after about a week of opening your pool.  Testing your water will balance your water for optimal performance over the year.  Everyone knows about PH and Chlorine levels, but what about your total dissolved solids, or calcium levels, or what about cyanuric acid.  These are all things that they test for when you bring in a water sample to a pool store.

You should do this yearly as i said when you open your pool to get your water in tip top shape.   Balancing your water properly at the beginning of the year will also help to save you some money during the year.

When a problem arises, most people think that they need to shock the pool.  Well... What if the problem isnt chlorine related?  Now your shocking your pool and still not taking care of your problem.  Therefore wasting money.

You have a 18X45 pool, which is a large above ground pool, so 3 bags of granular chlorine will be good for when you shock it.  you shouldnt have to shock your pool more than once every week or every 2 weeks depending on use.

  6. If your only way to maintain your chlorine is to shock your pool you need help.

3# of shock could be enough to chlorinate a 30,000 gallon pool to normal levels.

Since you mention last year was a disaster you should hire a competent pool maintenance company.  If you want to learn how to do it yourself, tell them, they should accommodate you.

Chlorine needs to be administered to the pool weekly or more often.  Shock is way overused and actually causes a lot of other problems.

Salt would not help you either makes your wallet or purse lighter!!

    You're welcome!!

  7. Forget the chemicals.  Make it a saltwater pool.  Less expensive, less chemicals and less maintenance.  Good luck.
