Latanna Stone misses qualifying for Match Play
Latanna Stone, the 10-year-old golf prodigy, failed to make it to the match play stage of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. She missed the cut in the qualifying round.
While she might be disappointed by her loss, many see this as an accomplishment. She is one of the youngest players to ever play in the qualifying round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. She joined the ranks of such illustrious players as Allisen
Corpuz and Michelle Wie.
Allisen Corpuz was the youngest player in the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links while Michelle Wie was in 2000 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Link.
Stone is very satisfied with her efforts in the Championship. She said, “I tried to make it to match play, but I already made a goal by qualifying for this. It was a big accomplishment”.
On the last day, in the Colorado golf course, she played well on the last holes. She mostly finished on par. The last hole was a great example, where she putted twice for a par score.
Her final score was 160 points. The 16 over-par score did nothing to diminish her appeal as a rising golf star.
Latanna Stone is fast becoming a golf sensation in the amateur world. She started playing at the age of 2 and by the age of five, she was already playing in various amateur events.
She has mostly played against players twice her age. Determined to make a name for herself in the golf circles, she said, “I like doing things first before other people”.
Other players who did manage to qualify for the next round were considered fortunate. The final spots were filled by a playoff that was hotly contested by the players.
The first round, the round of 64, saw some upsets that caused many experts to revise their assessments for the second round.
Many top rated players won their matches. The top player in the qualifying round was South Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim. She won her matches with ease and is now in the second round of the championship.
Lydia Ko, who stood second in the qualifying round, also won her match and will play against Amy Anderson in the next round.
