my boyfriend used the free tax filing on the IRS website. it used a 3rd party bank in california (the same one that is used with turbo tax) so that means he is suppoed to get a paper check. it was supposed to be mailed out by may 23 and we still havent gotten it yet.

what should we do?

  1. When did he file?  If he filed too late for his return to be PROCESSED by April 15th he won't be in the first run of payments.  If that's the case, he should see his sometime within the next few weeks.

Edit:  Filing "before the deadline" isn't necessarily early enough.  For an e-filed return, it works out to about April 5th or 6th.  For a mailed return, it works out to about March 5th or so.

  2. Did he file an amendment, or have his return questioned in any way, or owe back taxes, child support, or defaulted student loans?  Any of those would hold it up, or cause it to be taken.   He should enter his info at https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/IRServlet... - if it says no info is available, then for some reason his is held up.  If it shows a mail date and he hasn't gotten it yet, then contact the IRS after 4-6 weeks - they won't take a report before then.

  3. You can go online or call the IRS to get an update.
