Question:

Lately I've been thinking about homeschooling?

Regular school is so stressful lately. I rarely get more then 5 hours, my grades are going down, teachers know nothing but to annoy the **** out of you, and the kids are.. not that great. I'm good with computers and I think this would be easier and better for me.

So I basically know how homeschooling works and stuff. Part of its online, part of its not. You can finish it early and have school of early. But can someone tell me more? Anything I'm missing? Any disadvantages? Tell me about the law concerning home schooling. Thanks

  1. I am a product of the homeschool-fad.... and I don't condone it, by any means. While I attribute my autonomy, maturation and self-exploration to my rather reclusive childhood... I simultaneously hold great resentment towards my mother for choosing this alternative lifestyle. If you are discouraged with public education, I would invite you to seek-out private schools before ever turning to self-education and online curricula.

If you are considering homeschooling because you wish to get more sleep... you're only doing a disservice to yourself. If you opt for the snooze button now, a lazy-lifestyle seems to be your underlying interest- and I don't know how that benefits your future, let alone your current position. What prevents your from going to bed earlier-- and getting eight hours?

Online-homeschooling is a waste of time. You might as well skip all of that and become some www-ordained minister.

If you do decide to self-educate (which, again, I advise against) pick up a real book... with pages, and ink... and learn from the source itself. And not some half-assed payable-by-credit-card website.

Learning to interact with annoying people is the most valuable skill one can have- after all, those 'annoying' kids inevitably turn-out to be, guess what-- annoying adults. Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and get to know the people you (want to) belittle. This is life, don't run from it- learn to enjoy it for all its quirks.

Lastly, because education is mostly regulated and controlled by the state, you will find that laws concerning self-education vary tremendously. If you are serious and want more information, you should read up on your states legislation and see what type of laws exists: prohibitions, fundings, contingencies, et cetera. Homeschooling is a serious under-taking... and a lonely one at that.

Be normal like everyone else. Because guess what, you are.

  2. I wouldn't do it unless you feel that is what you have to do.  While in high school i decided to leave to be home-schooled for a very brief period of time.  In the end it was best decision I ever made to go back to public school.  The social success and experience that came after this return are what will stay with me for the remainder of my life.  All in all it completely depends on your social situation and how important the changes this will cause are to you.

  3. Homeschooling is what you make of it, however, those who WANT to homeschool usually do very well with it. They are motivated, have drive, have a goal, and go for it.

There are a ton of uneducated answers on here today. We've been homeschooling for nearly three years. My kids are quite social, we don't restrict their TV or computers, they aren't locked in a basement, they DO have different values, ie family is important, because they haven't been brainwashed by 300 peers at school into thinking siblings suck and parents are stupid. They do know who we truly are because we're together a lot more.

Law depends on where you live, www.hslda.org would tell you more about it. We live in Ok, soo easy to homeschool here.  We have computers, but they certainly aren't required, we designed our own curriculum for a while, and then dropped it altogether to unschool, which is more work for me but much more appropriate for any learner.

Good luck, hang around for a while and read at www.unschooling.com for more info.

  4. disadvantages clearly are more social in nature, i have a family of cousins that are all home schooled, and they seem quite unusual to me. its just becuase they dont really get that interaction with their peers as much as an average student.

  5. If I were you, I would stay in my regular school.   It may be hard, but that's life.  It's definitely not going to get any easier when you're an adult and have to worry about work.   If you can't even deal with school, then chances are that you're not going to do well in the REAL world.

It may sound harsh, but suck it up and stay in school!

  6. i have a friend thats a boy and he homeschools at home to. he has friends cause he went to school before. sometimes he doesnt like it tho cause today we had a snowday and he still has to get up everyday at 7 and do homeschooling.

  7. Many people find homeschool to be an ideal educational choice. It does allow you more healthy sleep practices than the scant 5 hours you have been getting. (Which is very bad for you health btw and often associated with grouchiness, poor work performance, depression and weight gain.) Homeschooling will only isolate you if you have no social skills to begin with or you make no attempt to make and maintain friendships. some people feel that the freedom to homeschool allows then more time for non-academic pursuits and good times with friends. Other people find they are able to graduate early or enroll in college classes before the finish homeschool. The experience is what you make it.

PS If “real life” were as full of petty drama as high school, why would they call petty drama, “so high school”? The highly concentrated drama of high school is unique to high school. The only lesson it has to teach you is that is pointless and to be avoided and disregarded by intelligent people.  I think you’ve got a firm grasp of that lesson. ;)

  8. yes, homeschool..its not bad u just need a computer for tests..check out aplusmath.com or applesfortheteacher.com

make worksheets and things...reach out there and get an education because that is your life!

  9. Everybody goes through regular stress from school... nobody has it easy, more then half of the students do not get enough sleep every night. There has been scientific studies that school should be starting later... sleep can really effect your mind, body, and personality if you don't get enough.

Try setting up a new routine for yourself, plan out your day and your tasks first achieve the most important tasks first(homework, projects) and then get to your free time... that way you have enough time to go to sleep earlier.

Yes, teachers are a pain. But again, no one said it was easy. Homeschooling costs quite alot of money and you won't have nearly as much fun as meeting new people from time to time or your friends....

I think you just need to suck it up,

    I understand its hard,

But you will get through it. Just try.

  10. I have a friend who does home schooling, and my mom did it for a college class, online im not sure thats the same thing though. The thing is, is that if you arent very driven its hard to stay on task, at school at least you have people to push you to do your  work.

  11. i am homeschooled, and i dont do anything online, all books!  i actually and really lonely (i havent bone homeschooled that long) and cant wait to be back to school in August, i miss other kids!

  12. Depending on how active your parents are you can be at a large disadvantage regarding making friends and becoming very lonely at home. Some areas have ways for Homeschooled students to get together to socialize but some don't. Do you really like your parents? because you'll be around them ALOT more. Also, if you plan on going to college it can be a bit more of a culture shock for you. School sucks until you get to college, if you can just keep your head down and focus on your grades than you can make it to college and have the time of your life. GL.

  13. your allowed to do it as long as your in highschool

disadvantage if your lazy and dont do your work theres no one to stop you

  14. Bad idea!

U might as well drop out and get a job instead of home school!

  15. well in homeschool its not a free world you still have to do work  but if you like socializing then homeschool probally is not your thing because you dont have classmates to interact with  your all alone but really, its your desicion i say u try it and if u dont like it go back to regular school i hope this helped =)

  16. Wow, I am sorry for all the uninformed answers you are getting! Do people ever do actual research before opening their mouths? How ignorant.

If your parents are on board and willing to partner with you, home school would be great. You can actually finish high school and move on to college classes. All you need is your SAT scores as well as college admittance test. If you get excepted, you can start College even without an official diploma. I actually have already checked on this for my daughter.

As far as social interaction, unless you plan on locking yourself away from the world, you will be fine. You will find you have more time to socialize, do community service, do clubs, sports or whatever you choose. Check out this article:
