Latest Ryder announcement set for 4pm, Monday finish looming
Hopes that play at the first day of the Ryder Cup would be resuming imminently have taken a hit with the news that an announcement on play restarting has been put back 'til 4.00 this afternoon.
That would presumably suggest a best case scenario that play would begin around 45 minutes later. But with no sign of the rain relenting, the possibility remains that Celtic Manor's Twenty Ten course will remain unplayable for the rest of the day.
Even if the fourball matches, suspended this morning at 9:45 after just two hours play, can get going again this afternoon, the worry is that failing light may render it difficult for players to make meaningful further progress.
And that in turn would likely point to the competition overrunning until Monday. If that happened it would be the first time in the Ryder Cup's 83-year-old history that the tournament has overrun, but such an outcome seems ever likelier as the rain continues to pelt down in Wales this afternoon.
