Curiosity remains the same regarding the illness of Bernard Tomic
Curiosity continues to increase regarding the absence of young tennis player Bernard Tomic from the 2011 Australian Open wildcard event.
The 18-year-old Tomic withdrew from the competition surprisingly, due to an undisclosed illness. Craig Tiley, who is the director of the Australian Open competition, said on Wednesday that the officials were given a certificate from Bernard’s medical specialist
showing that he was unfit to take part in the contest.
However, no further details were provided regarding the exact health and fitness condition of the former national boy’s winner.
Peter Luczak wins his opening Australian Open wild card playoff match
Peter Luczak of Victoria, who triumphed in his opening clash earlier in the morning, was previously scheduled to take on Tomic in the quarterfinal stage. He got the better of Luke Saville of Australia in three sets. The final match score was 6-2 4-6 6-2.
Peter, while commenting on Tomic’s illness, after the match on Wednesday said, "Unless I had a twisted ankle or a broken leg I would have been out here trying. But you do not know, he might be severely ill. You would have to ask him."
Luczak, as a result of this win, will next take on James Lemke who overpowered Jared Easton in three sets earlier in the day. The final match score was 6-4 7-6 (6-3) 6-2.
The Melbourne resident from Australia, Peter wants to try the main tour next year for the last time before announcing his retirement from the professional tour.
While commenting on his plans of retirement, the 31-year-old said, "I will definitely play next year and then I will see how I go. If I am close to sneaking into the 2012 London Olympics I could keep going but otherwise I could be hanging my racquets up.
If I am ranked around 200 and my motivation is not quite there then I won't be playing anymore."
He further added, "I think it is just a little bit tougher when you are playing at ATP level - all year my ranking was good enough to get into the tournaments and I feel like I hardly won a match. I am going to have to drop back to the challenger level
at the start of next year and hopefully I can get a few wins under my belt and get some confidence and get back in the top 100.”
In other action, Jelena Dokic and Alicia Molik also won their second successive clashes as they continue their quest for an Open wildcard.
Molik, overpowered Sophie Letcher 6-4 7-6 (7-4) whereas Dokic hammered down Nina Catovic in straight sets. The final match score was 6-3 6-2.
