Latest on Mexico City taxis.....?

A couple of years ago people were warning about Mexico City VW taxis outside and said don't use them. There was a number to call for an official taxi. How are things these days? Not safe for many tourists still?

The taxis in Mexico are like in all the world! there are many safe and many unsafe....

In the street is more unsafe, so you can call a taxi by phone, but is more expensive...

Allways ask a mexican guy for the regular price from your origin to your destiny an then ask the taxi driver for the price...

you should still never ever ever ever take a taxi off the street no matter what kind of taxi it is.  always call.

Is better that you still keeping that advice.

The safest way to take a taxi at Mexico City is calling by phone or in a official site (Like outside of the hotels and restaurants) The problem with taking  a  "free" taxi at the street is because isn't controled.

But don't worry, the taxis by phone or at the official sites(They have VW too),  aren't very expensive and you will be safe, so keep that advice.

(Sometimes is expensive taking a taxi, but is because the distance between one point to another in Mexico City could be very very very far, is one of the largest cities in the world)

So, yes, never take an ordinary taxi at the street, only the site taxis or by phone.

i rode in one of the little green and white beetle taxi's in mexico city about 5 years ago. i traveled all over mexico that summer and enjoyed the rides in most places. but the ride in mexico city was the scariest ride of my life.
