  1. do you mean the hawkeye thing?

it can only be replayed or awarded if the player actually challenges the call, and if the players right then they normally replay. so say someone plays and its called out, so there opponant gets the point but they think it's in, the player challenges and if it is in, they replay.

they have 3 challenges per set. i think its if they are correct they keep 3 challenges, and if not they have a challenge deducted so they only have 2 and then 1 etc.

  2. The decision of the umpire is based on the 'outcome' of the challenged ball. I'll explain. There are four situations.

    1) Roger plays a first serve that Rafa clearly can't return, but the serve is called out. Roger challenges and hawk-eye shows the ball touched the line. In this case: NO REPLAY because "the point was made".

    2) Roger plays a second serve and while Rafa returns it correctly (his return is "in"), but the serve is called out and Roger challenges. Hawk-eye shows the ball touched the line... In this case: REPLAY the point, because the serve was good and the return was good.

In 1 and 2 there is little room for the umpire to decide to replay or not, these are clear cut cases.

In some cases, there could be come discussion about whether the (wrong) call has influenced the play. Say Roger plays a solid cross forehand, and Rafa is well behind the baseline, running towards the ball... Roger's balled is called out, so Rafa seems to slow down a little and doesn't really return the ball as if his life depended on it, so it goes in the net. Roger challenges, Hawk-eye shows the ball was in... Well, was the point "made" or not?

Should the umpire reward the point to Roger in this case, it's like that Rafa will contest, because he (clearly or seemingly) slowed down AFTER the out call. So it's more like that the umpire will decide to replay the point.

  3. if the player challenges and they replay and find out the player's challenge was true the player has still 3 challenges remaining but if the player challenges and only to find out it was false then they minus 1 challenge

  4. hi there! i'm stephon o'neal and i've been browsing tennis websites helping out newbies in tennis..i also work as a part time trainer and tennis instructor to both beginner and andvanced level players near my town's tennis center..i've been an umpire in local tourneys around my vicinity hundreds of times and i've been to several tennis opens such as wimbeldon,Us, French open, etc. as well..what caught my attention was the reply above..

    eruditous's reply was

hmm, basing from what i know (from watching countless tennis videos and matches around the world), eruditious' reply is still very UNRELIABLE,INCONCLUSIVE and DOES NOT PROVE anything other than the fact that you know "BASIC" rules of tennis at the moment..

i suggest that you post your source to enlighten us all please..

preferably, pls give us a well credible reference such as a book (with title, author with his credentials and page number) or an article (NOT an INTERNET ARTICLE pls) with a direct quotation from the author as well as their respected dates of publication..

thank you and have a nice day..
