Latest updates from If Stockholm and Kremlin Cup Men’s singles competition
The twenty nine year old Jarkko Nieminen of Finland has reached the semi final round of the 2010 If Stockholm Open Men’s singles competition on Friday after getting the better of James Blake from the United States of America in two sets.
Score of the final match was 6-0, 6-2. Nieminen, who as a result of this victory snapped a six match losing streak versus the American, needed just fifty minutes to seal victory on Friday.
The left hander Jarkko has recorded his first victory against Blake, who won the title battle at the If Stockholm Open back in 2005 and 2006 in Sweden.
Jarkko, who turned professional back in 2000, achieved his career highest ranking of world number thirteen back in 2006. He has so far captured a total of one ATP singles trophy and two doubles crown in his professional life. His best
performance in a major event was a quarter final run at the United States Open back in 2005, Wimbledon in 2006 and the Australian Open back in 2008.
The Masku resident, who was also a finalist at the PTT Thailand Open last month to Guillernmo Garcia Lopez during the Asian swing, won seventy percent of his service points and blasted five aces on his way to victory. He prevented the
two break points he faced to get past the American and as a result improved his match record to 25-24 on the year.
In other action in Moscow, Pablo Cuevas avenged his Pilot Pen loss at the hands of Radek Stepanek by thrashing out the fifth seed Czech in two sets at the 2010 Kremlin Cup Men’s singles competition on Friday. The final match score was
6-4, 7-6(3).
Pablo, as a result of this victory has made his way into his first ATP World Tour semi-final of the season without even dropping a single set. He previously hammered down the top seed Nikolay Davydenko by firing ten aces in the initial
rounds in Moscow.
Cuevas after the match while commenting on his victory said, "It was a tough match, very even, the difference with New Haven was that I served better and made less errors. I played more aggressive without missing as much as I did in New
Haven. I came to Moscow for the first time last year and had a nice time, I like the courts and it is a good event."
