Lath and plaster needs removed, is this a good time to add wiring?

My house is very old. It has lathe and plaster walls including the ceiling. It is upstairs, so it curves in like many old houses. (barn like)

There is only one plug in currently. And does have a ceiling light.

When the lath is removed is this a good time to add more wiring? Or does it matter because it would have to be ran to the basement? Or no, only to the current plug in up there?

Ofcourse i am not doing this a friend will. He is a general contractor.

I am just wondering and thanxs.

  1. yes but how old is the current wiring in your home?  Once I saw the old wiring in my house I decided to replace it and add new outlets!  My wiring was very old and ran through little insulators! scary looking and a real fire hazzard too!!!  The coating on the wiring was cracked and the wire was bare in numerous places!!! I also added new phone lines and cable tv jacks too!!! Now I have a brand new 1925 house!!!

  2. You mean when the walls and ceiling joist are open and accessible?

  3. In order not to have code violation issues when you try to sell the house all mechanical systems should be brought up to code. This would also include framing such as ceiling joists, as well as framing around door and window openings. It would probably be a good idea to get permits for the  work as these are really for your protection. If you don't, depending on how strict the county is that you live in, you could be forced to remove all improvements and do it all over again to code at your expense.

  4. Yes now is a good time to do this, it can be hooked into existing outlet or light fixture and does not have to have a seperate line ran to the basement.

  5. Of course it is. It's easier and cheaper.
