Is it a particularly hard job launching a liner; I thought you just smashed a bottle and said the ship's name, who cares who does it?!

She didn't launch it , she only named it.

A ship built in Italy ,owned by an American company and crewed by foreigners.

It's a job for a royal, not necessarily the Queen. As the wife of the Heir Apparent, Camilla is second in line of precedence (females) after the Queen.
