Laundering uniforms at home?

I work for an NHS trust. We have to take our uniforms home to wash them. Should they they not have to supply a linen service. Infection control say that a domestic machine is not hot enough to handle it. My manager says it is.But why should I anyway. They dont pay me for the extra that washing at home costs. Why should I have to.

Robin is almost correct - you can claim tax relief for washing your uniform at home, not the cost of washing your uniform at home. There is a fixed rate expense deduction for nursing staff - go to www.hmrc.gov.uk for a list. If you are not on the list of jobs there, you will need to negotiate your own relief with your tax office - but you don't need a special form.

This has always been a bone of contention, between Unions and Trusts. The ruling is, uniforms can be washed at home and you can claim the expense back on your tax. The Tax Office will send you a form.
