Laundry Detergent Alternatives?

Anyone know of Alternatives we can use in place of expensive Laundry Detergent?

It took a while to find, BUT persistence pays off. The most popular (and most tested) recipe for home made laundry soap is as follows:

(1) quart of boiling water

(2) bars of FINELY grated soap, preferably low fragrance

(2) cups of BORAX: 20 Mule Strong, which can be found in most grocery stores, with the detergents.

(2) cups of ARM and HAMMER Super Washing Soda, which again, can be found in most grocery stores, in the laundry isle.

(2) gallons of water

After the water is boiled, mix in the grated soap. Stir until the soap is COMPLETELY dissolved. Pour the soap/water mixture into pail or bucket.  Pour in the BORAX and the washing soda, and the two gallons of water, Stir the mixture until all of the ingredients are mixed together thoroughly.

Cover the pail completely, and use 1/4 cup for each load of laundry.

Substitute 50gms of the laundry detergent with 50 gms laundry soda.  Works well and ekes out the expensive detergent (laundry soda only about 60p Kg.)

This probably isn't for every day use but my husband and his dad are both mechanics and get real grasy and dirty dealing with cars. My mother in law appearently always used murphy's oil soap(like hardwood floor cleaner) to get the tough grime out of their clothes. Never tried it, but it might work.

I would try Baking Soda with Borax that should come out cheapier

try caustic (think thats how it is spelt) soda it costs about 40p for a large beg and its great on stains can be bought in any supermarket xx
