Laura Davies caps off 2012 season on promising note
English Laura Davies could not clinch a victory at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, but her solid performance made her stand out among big names.
Davies, who was one of the few veterans in the field of season-ending LET (Ladies European Tour) tournament, held at Emirates Golf Club, Dubai, knew her experience would help her inflict a defeat on rivals, and she showed it in the third round on Friday.
The 49-year-old Davies shot an overall 280 to finish tied for the 16th position along with Julieta Granada.
The four-day tournament featured stars like Spanish Carlota Ciganda and Caroline Masson of Germany.
Getting off to a sluggish start, Davies shot a 71 in the first round. She shot three birdies and two bogeys. In the second round, her performance remained the same, posting a 71 once again.
However, the third round saw her switch to an aggressive mode as she posted a massive 66. The English star let her fans see the best game, as she made solid putts even on the trickiest holes.
Davies reeled off seven birdies, but failed to maintain the momentum on the par-4 14th, carding bogey.
Davies was not able to grab a victory in the 2012 season, but she managed to record four top-10 finishes. Her best performance was recorded at the Unicredit Ladies German Open 2012 as she posted an overall 275 to take the second position on the leaderboard.
She jetted to Ireland in early August to take part in the Ladies Irish Open. The tournament was held at the prestigious County Meath, Ireland. Davies’ performance gripped the spectators’ attention as she posted an overall 213 to finish third on the leaderboard.
Chinese Shanshan Feng was the strongest contender in the roster because she won her maiden Dubai Masters title after she shot an overall 267. Feng recorded a five-stroke victory against nearest rival Dewi Claire Schreefel who shot a 272.
Feng kept the pressure on rivals intact in the final round, posting a 69. “I started the day with two pars, and then an eagle on the third hole. I made a long putt there,” Feng said while speaking to the media at the end of the tournament last Saturday.
