Laura Enever and Lakey Peterson survive Round 2 of Roxy Pro Gold Coast – Surfing News
Australia’s Laura Enever and America’s Lakey Peterson successfully made it through the elimination Round 2 of 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, Roxy Pro Gold Coast, which went down on Sunday, February 26, at Snapper Rocks
in Queensland, Australia.
Enever took the win by defeating Brazil’s Jacqueline Silva to in the first heat to advance through into the third round while eliminating the latter from the competition.
Defeating France’s Pauline Ado in the second heat enabled Peterson to secure her place in the next round while bringing the event to a premature end for her rival.
After a lacklustre performance and hard luck on day 1 of Roxy Pro Gold Coast, the Round 2 competitors were determined to put on a much better show on Sunday to keep themselves alive in the race for the event title.
The first heat saw the 20-year-old Enever take on the 32-year-old Silva in a battle for survival. Despite the difference in the experience of the two surfers, the battle went down to the wire.
Getting off to a slow start, the battle intensified as the heat got past the half-way stage. Silva used her experience to collect a couple of good scores to get to a heat-total of 12.20 points. Enever kept her nerves in check and patiently remained on a
look-out for an opportunity to score big. In the dying minutes of the heat, she caught a good right-hander to add a big score to her account, finishing with a heat-total of 13.37 points and walking away with the win.
The second heat saw the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rookie Peterson squaring off with the 21-year-old Ado.
The 17-year-old American caught the best wave of the day to unleash a string of carving turns to earn a 9.00 for the effort. Finishing with an eventual heat-total of 16.33 points against her French rival’s 14.37 points, Peterson claimed the win to advance
through into the next round.
“I’ve been looking forward getting here to the Gold Coast for quite some time since I qualified,” Peterson said. “We’ve had a few months off, I’ve been getting ready and training for this. The waves are fun and the sun came out today, and the crowd is amazing.
I’m just so happy to be here surfing against my heroes, these girls are so much fun to surf against because it makes me surf better.”
The surfing action will continue with the remaining heats of Roxy Pro Gold Coast’s Round 2 at Snapper Rocks.
