Laura Enever downs Sofia Mulanovich to reach Quarter-finals at Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
Australia’s Laura Enever prevailed over Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich in the opening heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 4 that went down at Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, April 20.
The crucial win over Mulanovich served to carry Enever into the Quarter-finals while removing the Peruvian surfer from the contention for the event title.
The prestigious female surfers continued to battle it out for survival on the latest day of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series. The clean four-to-six foot waves breaking at the primary event site could hardly be
considered ideal, but the surfers had no option but to somehow adapt to the conditions as a failure to put on a solid performance meant elimination from the competition.
Enever had been nothing short of impressive during the early stages of the 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour, but was struggling to find her rhythm at Dee Why point. The inconsistency had pushed her against the edge on a number of occasions, though they managed
to bounce back strongly to stay alive in the event so far.
Pitted against Enever in the first heat of Round 4 was Mulanovich. The ASP women’s elite tour veteran was not new to pressure, though the sort of form exhibited by her at the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic could hardly be considered decent. She had little
reason to doubt her chances of making it into the next stage of the competition though as she was about to face a surfer who was not in the best of forms either.
As the battle for the Quarter-final spot got underway, Enever got off to a modest start, locking her first business-wave in the early minutes to post a 4.25 on the score-board. She went on to add an additional 7.00 to her account, moving to a heat-total
of 11.25 points.
Mulanovich once again disappointed her fans as she struggled to cope with the conditions and failed to post a single decent score on the score-board. Collecting a couple of two-point rides the Peruvian surfer finished with a heat-total of 4.85 points, consequently
surrendering victory and the Quarter-final spot to Enever.
