Laura Enever downs Tyler Wright to enter Roxy Pro Gold Coast Final – Surfing News
Australia’s Laura Enever got the better of her compatriot Tyler Wright in the first Semi-final of Roxy Pro Gold Coast that went down at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, on Sunday, March 4.
With her crucial win in the Semi-final, she advanced through into Final to battle it out for the coveted title.
The 20-year-old Enever had not gotten off to the best of starts at the first stop of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour. She tasted an early disappointment in the very first round of the competition to get relegated to
the second round. However, she managed to bounce back strongly to move into the third round. A solid performance allowed her to jump straight into the Quarter-final without having to go through the fourth round. Continuing her momentum in the Quarter-finals,
she managed to make Brazil’s Silvana Lima succumb to her to secure her place in the Semi-finals.
Pitted against Enever in the battle for the coveted title shot was Wright. The 17-year-old Australian had emerged as the Rookie of the Year in 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour and was expected to give the elite female surfers a real run for their money.
As the first Semi-final got underway, Wright got off to an excellent start, locking a wave in the opening minutes of the heat to unload a series of exquisite manoeuvres to post an 8.50 on the score-board. As the heat progressed, she managed to add an additional
7.67 points to her account, taking her heat-total to 16.17 points. The score seemed like a pretty promising once considering the low tides, with the waved ranging between two-to-three feet.
Despite finding herself on the back-foot during the initial stages of the heat, Enever managed to step up as the heat reached the half-way stage and charged towards an approaching juicy wave to throw down a series of turns and carves, triggering a round
of applause from the crowd gathered as the primary event site. The judges deemed the wave worthy of a 9.07, giving her a pretty ideal score to build on.
In the final minutes of the heat, she added an additional 7.63 points to her account, finishing with a heat-total of 16.70 points. The 0.53-point lead over her rival was enough to seal the fate of the contest in her favour and carry her through into the
Final.
The surfing action continued at Snapper Rocks with the second Semi-final before heading towards the Final of Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
