Laura Letrari and Jonatan Kopelev earns 50m backstroke title: Day three – Luxembourg Euro-Meet 2012
Laura Letrari of Bolzano Nuoto and Jonatan Kopelev of Israel outshined their competitors in the Women and Men’s 50m backstroke respectively on third day of the 14th Luxembourg Euro Long Course Meet 2012 on Sunday, January 29.
The 22-year-old Letrari remained dominant over her competitors throughout the single lap event. With her extraordinary skills, she not only gathered gold medal of the swim, but she also improved the Championship Record of the event by reporting an effort
of 29.06 seconds.
The gold medallist was trailed by Simona Baumrtova of Czech Swimming Federation, who remained just 0.17 seconds slower from her and secured the podium for silver medal by hitting the wall in a time of 29.23 seconds. In the meantime, the arena saw a noteworthy
struggle of Hellenic Swimming Federation’s Theodora Drakou, who ended her swim just 0.05 seconds after Baumrtova and emerged on the finishing end for third position by posting a time of 29.28 seconds.
Subsequently, the crowd witnessed a breath-taking effort of Kopelev in the Men’s equivalent event, who devastated hopes of his competitors by occupying gold medal of the swim with an effort of 25.16 seconds.
He remained 0.97 seconds ahead of his following swimmer and team-member, Yakov Toumarkin, who reached the finishing wall for second position by submitting a time of 26.13 seconds. He was trailed by Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or, who completed his swim with a third
fastest effort of 26.41 seconds.
Next was the Women’s 400m freestyle where, Caitlin McClatchey of Loughborough University impressed her fans by earning top position in the swim as she posted a time of 4 minutes and 09.77 seconds.
McClatchey was followed by Silke Lippok of S.Startgemeinschaft Pforzheim, who stayed almost seven seconds behind her and ended second with a time of 4 minutes and 16.11 seconds. The third spot of the race was claimed by Amalie Emma Thomsen of Elite Svoem
Esbjerg, who clocked an effort of 4 minutes and 21.42 seconds for bronze medal.
Afterwards, Sergiy Frolov of Ukrainian Swimming Federation proved his mettle in the Men’s 400m discipline. He faced tough competition from Christian Scheruebl of Austrian Swimming Federation, but managed to out-touch him on the finishing wall. Frolov clocked
a time of 3 minutes and 54.94 seconds for gold medal while Scheruebl ended his swim in 3 minutes and 54.98 seconds.
Ioannis Drymonakos of Hellenic Swimming Federation accomplished third position of the event as he touched the wall in 3 minutes and 58.85 seconds.
The spectators appreciated commendable efforts of all participants in their exclusive events. Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all events in Men and Women’s class whereas the position holders received their awards and accolades at the
medal ceremony of the championship.
