Laura Pous-Tio progresses into the quarterfinal of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open
In the most one-sided match on Wednesday at the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open, world number 85 Laura Pous-Tio of Spain destroyed Jill Craybas to secure a 6-1, 6-1 second round victory.
The $220,000 Barcelona Ladies Open is Pous-Tio’s seventh WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tournament. In Fes she lost to Alberta Brianti, in Marbella to Victoria Azarenka, in Indian Wells to Samantha Stosur, in Monterrey to Anastasija
Sevastova, in Acapulco to Gisela Dulko, in Bogota to Petra Martic, and in Hobart she was edged past by the Belarusian Olga Govortsova in straight sets.
Pous-Tio started the match perfectly. She broke Craybas immediately and held serve after that to take a 2-0 lead. The Spaniard kept her momentum flowing and again broke in Craybas’s second game and with Pous-Tio going one up 4-0,
the first set was pretty much over with Spaniard’s lead 6-1 in the set.
The second set followed the same pattern with Spaniard’s dominion. The Spaniard pro was serving extremely well and backing her serve up with powerful ground strokes. She scored 67 percent of points on her service and 59 percent
on points on return. Craybas on the other hand registered a meager 39 percent of points in total and lost the match with a loss of twelve games.
Pous-Tio had no trouble defeating the American in straight sets. In fact it was a very lucky day for her and her serve were working really well for her. With this win, Pous moves on ahead to face Polona Hercog of Slovenia in the
quarterfinal of the tournament. Hercog moved past Mirjana Lucic of Croatia and Jamie Hampton of American, who was a lucky loser at the tournament.
In other action-packed performances from the day Alberta Brianti, Lucie Hradecka, Estrella Cabeza Candela, Sara Errani, Polona Hercog, Roberta Vinci and Virginie Razzano all registered impressive wins against their opponents to
stay on track for a meeting in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
